As the benefactor funding Esther's college scholarship, Philomena Guinea swoops in when Esther attempts suicide and funds her stay at a private psychiatric institution. But Esther can't seem to connect with Philomena Guinea in the same way that she does with Jay Cee and Dr. Nolan. Philomena Guinea made her fortune as a writer, true, but she made her fortune writing trashy romance novels, which Esther, with her own high literary standards, just can't stomach.
