Good news: Jesus did away with the need for all social norms and class distinctions.
Bad news: this won't be happening just yet.
Paul walks a fine line when it comes to society and class. On one hand, he understands that it's kind of crazy the way we separate ourselves out and set one group up as superior to another. But he also doesn't want to rock the boat too much. Christians can't afford to take the heat. So, he takes a neutral ground. Slaves, obey your masters…but masters, don't be too mean. Hey, it's a start.
Questions About Society and Class
- How does society change and grow over time? Are there social norms from the 1st century that we still cling to today?
- Is Paul smart to look for a middle ground? Or is this just a big cop-out on his part?
- Socially, the Jewish people are on a lower rung of the ladder than Gentiles. But they view themselves as spiritually superior. Why is that?
