Thousands of feel-good clichés apply, but they all mean one thing: sometimes you've got to fight for what you believe in. The early Christians were being challenged for their beliefs pretty frequently. After all, they were a small group, and some of their ideas looked pretty wacky to outsiders. (A crucified criminal peasant was God's son? Okaaay…) It was important for them all to stick together to keep the Jesus train going. We don't know about you, but we'd say their strategy worked out pretty well.
Questions About Perseverance
- Does suffering build character? Why or why not?
- Is there safety in numbers? Would it be easier to be to hold onto your ideals and beliefs if you knew other people were doing it, too?
- Christians started off as an oppressed minority. They would later go onto the role of oppressors in some case. Why is that? Did they forget their roots? Or is power just that delicious?
