While the widow's advice is never really heeded in the novel, she does do her best to try to steer Jude and Sue in the right direction. She at least tells Sue not to remarry Phillotson, and boy, is she right about that one. The old widow (and Aunt Drusilla) don't truly fit the Guide/Mentor role, but they're the closest thing the novel has to that classic character type.
