Duncan Mackeigh

Character Analysis

This is the second bad encounter Davie has on the island of Mull. He falls in with a blind man who turns out to be both a religious instructor and a highway robber. Davie manages to escape by pretending to be armed. Once again, the whole split personality thing seems to be cropping up. One thing about this guy that's pretty funny: a local innkeeper tells Davie that Mackeigh may have become a highwayman (robber) because he's spent so much time traveling as part of his religious vocation. After all, if you're on the road all the time, why not earn some extra cash by robbing people at the same time? (Not that Shmoop is advocating this practice!)
