Gospel of Mark Humility Quotes

How we cite our quotes: (Chapter:Verse)

Quote #1

He called the crowd with his disciples, and said to them, "If any want to become my followers, let them deny themselves and take up their cross and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. (NRSV 8:34-35)

And when he had called the people unto him with his disciples also, he said unto them, Whosoever will come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. For whosoever will save his life shall lose it; but whosoever shall lose his life for my sake and the gospel's, the same shall save it. (KJV 8:34-35)

Following Jesus doesn't mean wealth or health—just affliction. We guess this is what it means to follow a Messiah who is rejected and dies (8:31). Womp womp.

Quote #2

He sat down, called the twelve, and said to them, "Whoever wants to be first must be last of all and servant of all." (NRSV 9:35)

And he sat down, and called the twelve, and saith unto them, If any man desire to be first, the same shall be last of all, and servant of all. (KJV 9:35)

Jesus is speaking these words to a bunch of disciples arguing about who's greatest (9:33). Do you think his point will stick?

Quote #3

Then he took a little child and put it among them; and taking it in his arms, he said to them, "Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me, and whoever welcomes me welcomes not me but the one who sent me." (NRSV 9:36-37)

And he took a child, and set him in the midst of them: and when he had taken him in his arms, he said unto them, Whosoever shall receive one of such children in my name, receiveth me: and whosoever shall receive me, receiveth not me, but him that sent me. (KJV 9:36-37)

Contrast these words to the fate of someone who maltreats a child in 9:42.
