Character Analysis
Luke is the head miller at Dorlcote Mill until the mill is sold to Mr. Wakem. Luke maintains his close ties with the Tullivers after their bankruptcy and he is very loyal to the family. Luke is especially friendly towards Maggie and lets her visit the mill with him when she is a little girl. He also helps to care for Mr. Tulliver after Mr. Tulliver’s illness. Luke enjoys leading a rather simple life where he worries about his job and his immediate surroundings and not the rest of the world. Despite his lack of education, Luke often expresses some rather insightful views. He strongly agrees with Mr. Tulliver’s opinions about the importance of home and the problems with going to new places.
