    Though most of the quotes listed here are from the Civil Rights Movement, about thirty or so years after Roll of Thunder takes place, it's quite clear how relevant the key issues of equality (or the lack thereof), anger with the "system," and a desire to become involved in politics in order to change the laws remain.

  2. For (A Little) Lighter Fare...
    The Watsons Go To Birmingham, 1963 also takes place way after Roll of Thunder. This book relays the car trip of a weird and somewhat silly family who take an opportunity (?) to drive from Michigan to Alabama in the middle of the Civil Rights Movement. For an African American family to up and do something like this… Well, we know from experience they are likely to meet up with some unpleasantness.
