The Book of the City of Ladies Book 2, Chapters 11-15 Summary

  • Lady Rectitude continues to give examples of women throughout literature, myth, and history who have shown intense devotion and loyalty to their parents. One woman even kept her mother alive in prison by visiting her and breastfeeding her. Yup, you read that right. A daughter who'd recently had a baby breastfed her own mother to keep her alive in jail. Apparently, the jailers were so moved by her devotion that they eventually let the mother go.
  • After this, Lady Rectitude feels as though she has made her point about the loyalty of daughters. We're inclined to agree, so let's move on shall we?
  • Now Rectitude announces that she (and Christine) have finished building the houses in the City of Ladies. So it's time to find the actual women who are going to live in it.
  • While they go looking for good women to bring to the City of Ladies, Christine asks Lady Rectitude whether it's true that marriage is a horrible thing because women make life horrible for their husbands. This is apparently a common belief in Christine's world.
  • Lady Rectitude says that this opinion is ridiculous, especially considering how often the opposite is the case. Alcoholic and abusive husbands are way worse than nagging wives.
  • We learn that Rectitude and Christine have already returned to the City of Ladies, accompanied by an entire population of good and virtuous women. Wow, that was pretty fast.
  • One of the women they've brought with them is Queen Hypsicratea, the loyal wife of King Mathridates. Apparently, Rectitude and Christine are able to recruit women from different parts of the world and different historical ages. So either something supernatural is going on or this is just a symbolic city they've been building.
  • Queen Hypsicratea was so devoted to her king husband that she cut her hair and dressed up as a man in order to follow him into battle. How's that for bravery and devotion? Another woman named Empress Triaria had a similar devotion to her husband.
