APA Style a la Shmoop.

00:02

APA stands for the American Psychological Association meaning that APA style is the perfect prescription

00:06

for papers on Psychology. [unhappy student on couch]

00:08

Unfortunately psychologists cant prescribe medication.

00:11

Which must be why they wrote such a huge guide instead. [psychologist pulls out huge manual, student screams]

00:14

APA style can be used for literature reviews and experimental reports. [lab technician working]

00:18

So if youre writing a book about an experiment APA styles your guy.

00:21

APA papers include a title page an abstract the main body and references.

00:25

The title page is easy to learn difficult to master. Like Tetris. [Tetris game falls down screen]

00:29

It includes things like the title your name and your school.

00:33

If you cant remember the name of your school go outside and check the building.

00:37

It should be on there.

00:39

Dont forget to include a header which is the title of your paper in ALL CAPS.

00:44

Not just some caps.

00:46

Lets keep things consistent.

00:48

The Abstract is where you let your inner Kandinsky shine.

00:51

Okay the abstract is actually a quick summary of your paper.

00:55

Think of it as a blurb on the back of a book or a trailer [people in movie theatre]

00:59

for a movie.

01:01

Some people even include keywords to make their work more easily searchable Oh and dont

01:05

forget your header.

01:07

Next we get to the main body of your paper where you flex your APA muscles. [body builder flexes muscles]

01:12

Any time you cite a source you need to include the authors name the year

01:16

in parentheses your quote and the page number.

01:19

Also in parentheses.

01:21

APA style keeps parentheses in business.

01:23

Last is your reference page.

01:25

You should put the word References centered at the top of the page.

01:29

Easy right Just dont bold underline or use quotation marks for the title.

01:33

Your references should speak for themselves.

01:36

List all the works youve cited in alphabetical order by authors last name.

01:40

Write out the full titles of your sources.

01:43

So APA style is perfect for psych papers as well as lit reviews and experimental reports.

01:47

It includes a title page an abstract the main body and your references.

01:51

And every page needs a header in all caps.

01:54

Or you know dont do any of that. [swirling optical illusion]

01:57

Okay that last bit of advice was brought to you by the American Reverse Psychological Association.

02:01

Maybe just ignore it.
