Fame
NCAA gymnastics fame is not going to land anybody on a cereal box or a major magazine cover. That's reserved for the Olympic glory experienced before an NCAA career. Tough break. Even though most of a gymnast's fame will come from the elite portion of their career, women's gymnastics is popular at the collegiate level, as well.
In 2014, three of the top five attendance figures in all of women's NCAA sports, basketball included, came from gymnastics teams. Two of those teams had total attendance figures for the season that topped 100,000 spectators (source).
If you're a successful female gymnast, then it's a safe bet that you'll gain some notoriety on campus and within the inner circle of posh gymnastic know-it-alls. If you're a male gymnast, the prospects of NCAA fame aren't very good. Elite male gymnasts in the professional phase of their careers often don't experience much fame, even when they're successful.
One recent Olympian claims that he earned more fame from a TV show than winning a silver medal (source). The dudes might want to try getting famous for doing backflips all the way to class or being a spokesperson for Subway…because it won't be from being on the team.
