Glory
Ah, glory. Yes indeed, glory is one thing there's plenty of in this field. Between the lives you save and the prestige of the position, one would hope that your Average Joe Somebody nephrologist could feel very proud of themselves indeed. If you're a nephrologist you've worked very hard to get where you are, and the care you're delivering is crucial for the folks unfortunate enough to need it.
If your degrees and the lives saved aren't glory enough, there's an American Society of Nephrology which does give out awards to those who are highly accomplished in the field, including esteemed educators. (Not to be confused with the made-up National Nephrology Awards from the Fame section.) With all the respect these folks get, you almost wonder why only fifty-five percent report job satisfaction.
