The College of St. Scholastica

About Me

Intro

You've practically got to trek through the Arctic to get to me, but I promise I'm worth the extra pair of earmuffs. Despite being considered a "stuffy private college" (curse you, UMD), I'm anything but your ordinary private college.

And I'm definitely not stuffy. In fact, I've got one of the biggest hearts around—that's why I'm so into social justice. Most of my students belong to some sort of social justice club, whether it's the Black Student Union, the Queer-Straight Alliance, or the All Abilities Equal Opportunities Club.

Another thing I'm way into is nursing. I've got one of the best programs in Minnesota, and my biochemistry and business management programs aren't too shabby, either. I've got a big brain to go with my big heart.

I'm a liberal arts college on paper, but in practice, I care just as much about STEM courses as I do liberal arts. And, yes, it's cold in northern Minnesota, but that doesn't stop me from having a blast outside. So read on. Let's break the ice (I'm pretty good at that because nine months out of the year I'm encased in it).

Name

Storm the Saint Bernard

Hometown

Duluth, Minnesota (just south of Canada, eh)

Birthdate

1912

Body Type

I'm a slim but sturdy lady. I'd like to say I'm as big and strong as a Viking, and I do often fantasize about being that awesome...but alas, some things just aren't meant to be. At a mere 168 acres of gentle hills and pretty trees, I'm on the small end.

Despite not being a giant Viking warrior, I actually like being small. I have about 2,800 undergrads sprinting around to make it on time after waiting in Storm's (dining hall) for their food, with about half that in graduates who seem to be slightly more chill and put together.

Managing these blossoming adults might seem difficult, but I have relatively small class sizes even within the most popular majors. My professors know quite a bit about their students' lives, and not because they're nosy. They're just super hands on, and trying to provide the best education they can.

Current Living Situation

Oh, I just love my dorm rooms. They're so conveniently located and reasonably-sized. I mean, come on. How many dorm rooms have their own sink, two big closets, two desks, and shelving for all of your storing needs? Mine do.

Residential Life actually recently went through and updated all the living spaces, mostly in an effort to stop all the stoves from setting off the fire alarms and forcing firefighters to come and make certain no one was burning.

Seriously, though, my residents aren't the best at cleaning those stoves. Use them at your own risk. Also, never make bacon. It just...doesn't work.

I have some really old and more-than-likely haunted apartments called the Bricks. Many of my sophomores live here along with the newer apartments that are farther away. Live in one of those also at your own risk, because walking to the castle (my main building) can get really, really cold. I swear some of my students are snowpeople.

While I require my students to live on campus for their first two years, I'm happy to let them move into town once they're upperclassmen. Yes, it's a long, cold walk—but that's what those fuzzy earflap hats are for.

Relationship Status

I live in Duluth, so there are more than a few...friends I see regularly. The University of Minnesota Duluth is one of them. He's literally a block away from me, and let me tell you, he's a total showoff. We're friends in a sort of frenemy way. I need his football field for my team...but man is he annoying sometimes.

Religion

I suppose most would consider me a Catholic school, but to be honest, I'm pretty relaxed about religion. You can have an atheist, a Catholic, a pagan, and an agnostic all sitting together in the same row and sharing opinions without getting too heated. I'm a school, not a YouTube comments section.

I do have a Benedictine monastery complete with sisters (not nuns. There's a difference). While the sisters have prominent roles at the school (one of them is a football coach), they're more like surrogate grandmas than administrators. Seriously, they're awesome.

Politics

I'm a liberal school in one of the most liberal areas of Minnesota. I'm also really big on friendly but spirited discussions. Of course, you can have your own opinions. Just be ready for a debate with your classmates...and possibly a professor or two.

You should apply to me if...

you're looking for small classes, hands-on teachers, and know how to survive the icy north.
