The College of St. Scholastica
Hallmarks and Quirks
Things I'm Good At:
- Turning people into incredible nurses. It's kinda what I'm known for, even though I'm officially a liberal arts college.
- Engaging and understanding students. It's possible that my professors care a little too much, but when you think about it, a desire to make sure every student learns a lot isn't such a bad thing in a professor.
- Ongoing mind-bending debates are something of a staple with me. The Alworth Lectures have a different social justice theme every year.
- Organizing events for students, both fun and interesting. Like I said above, I like my complex lectures. I also get singers, comedians, and occasionally a play going.
My Top 5 Must-Haves:
- Blankets, sweaters, gloves, and a hat. Seriously, it gets cold here. Like, ice-covering-my-entire-body cold.
- A decent pair of shoes. Walking on the hills in heels or flip-flops... Do. Not.
- A decent planner. My academic year is on the short side, so all the material gets covered faster. You don't want to be caught unprepared.
- An open mind. I live in one of the friendliest states in America (possibly the friendliest), but if there's a good debate going on, you can bet I'm going to jump right in.
- A microwave. Don't debate with me on this. There will be a time when you get food and bring it back to your dorm only to find your once hot soup is now frozen solid. Okay maybe it's not that bad, but you'll definitely want to reheat it.
Why You Might Have Heard of Me:
- My castle, known as Tower Hall by outsiders, and affectionately called Hogwarts by my students. It's where most of my liberal arts classes and faculty are found, along with the president of the college.
- One of the Benedictine sisters is also the assistant football coach. The idea sounds laughable, but the winning streaks she helps produce sure aren't.
- My create-your-own majors are pretty fun, and allow my students to do whatever makes them happy.
- I'm one of the top nursing schools in the state. Not to brag or anything. Just thought you should know.
On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...
Alright, I'm coming clean: I really like The Zinema's Renegade Improv. It's raunchy and coarse, but it's also undeniably funny. I'm usually there on a Saturday night—and if I'm not there, I'm at one of the bars, hanging out with good friends and live music, be it jazz, folk, or traditional Irish music.
If I'm in the mood for a quieter evening, I like to go to one of the local restaurants for happy hour sushi, burritos, pasta, or whatever else I'm in the mood for.
Favorite Hangouts:
- Benedictine Commons is the place to go if you need some intense studying to get done. No one talks because the walls have a habit of echoing, so the silence is amazing. Just don't fall asleep.
- My Student Union is a nice place to meet with friends and chill between classes. There's always something fun going on at any point in the day—think free pancakes from Campus Ministry or walking tacos from the Latino Student Union.
- My library is the go-to place for study groups. There are also tons of resources for those research papers that every student will inevitably be assigned.
- I have an Einstein Bros. right in my science building. Whether you need coffee to wake you up or a quick snack, you and everyone else will find yourself there nearly every day.
- Storm's Den, which is the second largest dining hall on campus, is the main go-to for lunch. There's a ton of food to choose from, whether you're in for something healthy, or it's finals week and you really, really want Pop-Tarts and chocolate milk for lunch.
Quirks:
- Despite being best known for my nursing program, I'm still a liberal arts gal at my core. Don't be shy if you'd rather study Socrates than skulls.
- My Open Major program allows you to explore a whole bunch of potential majors pressure-free. How should you know that you like something if you can't try it first, right? Instead of declaring and then switching a billion times, you can sample majors like they're different kinds of shrimp at a really great buffet.
