Explain how specific images (e.g., a diagram showing how a machine works) contribute to and clarify a text.

Images allow us to see things that might be difficult to describe properly, and as long as students understand that, they will have understood this Common Core standard. One way to hit this standard home is to have students read a description of the inside of a machine, draw it based on what they see in their heads, and then compare their drawing to a diagram of how the machine actually looks like in real life.
