California State University--Monterey Bay
About Me
Intro
Hello, beautiful humans. I'm quite aware that many of you have no idea who, what, or where I am, so let me be the one to set the record straight. I live in a little town located forty minutes south of Santa Cruz, twenty minutes north of Big Sur, and seven minutes inland from Fort Ord Dunes State Beach. Talk about dreamy.
It's fair to say that sports are not my trademark, even though I am part of NCAA Division II. I mean, my mascot is a sea otter named Monte Rey and we call our sports center "The Kelp Bed." That should tell you everything you need to know.
So what is my trademark?
Well, sustainability and service. I'm located in a marine sanctuary, which means my waters are so pristine that they could compete with Hawaii (but let's get real, a thick wet suit is needed if you want to hop in). Who wouldn't want to preserve these beautiful surroundings?
I'm not exactly rumored to be a party school, but hey, it's college—if you look, you will find. Perhaps I earned that reputation for being a school that forces its students to do community service…whatever, I say it builds character.
In the event that you're longing for a weekend out in the city, San Francisco is less than two hours north. But seriously, nothing can beat the beautiful Monterey Bay.
Name
Monte Rey the sea otter
Hometown
I'm located in both Marina and Seaside in good ol' Historic Monterey Bay, CA, near a wonderfully picturesque (and abandoned) military base, a.k.a. Fort Ord.
Birthdate
Established in 1994 and classes first began August 28, 1995. Best believe I'm fresher than the rest of these old timer universities.
Body Type
Let me tell you one thing: I have plenty of land to explore and roam around campus, but when it comes to my student body, things can get pretty intimate. With a population of 6,631 students, you can expect to get to know your fellow otters and professors pretty well. If you're interested in a hands-on experience, I'd be your ideal match.
Intimidated by the ideas of massive college lecture halls? No prob. I'm like a dream. In my classes, your voice will be heard. Class sizes can be so small that you'll actually get to know and even (dare I say it?) become friends with your professors. Hello, letter of recommendation.
Current Living Situation
Just like most CSUs, my freshmen start in dorms located on my main campus and within walking distance of classrooms. Meal plans are required for dormies, which is great because, you know, you won't starve.
As a sophomore, you're eligible to live in the North Quad housing suites. These are located on campus and offer single or double occupancy rooms in a four-bedroom, two-bath configuration. Juniors and seniors can live in the Strawberry Apartments or East Campus Housing.
East Campus is definitely where it's at. It's an entire neighborhood full of fellow college students. You can have your own house, porch, or backyard (depending on whether you get the top or bottom floor) and you're only two miles away from campus. This means you can roll outta bed, start your car, and be in class in less than ten.
Unlike most other universities, I don't make things difficult for car owners. I'm a total commuter college.
If you don't have a car, biking is a popular method of transportation. Also, your student ID card can be used to ride the MST (Monterey-Salinas Transit) buses for free.
Oh yeah, and I do have a Greek system, but you'd never know it existed.
Relationship Status
Well, considering I don't have a football team, I don't have a single arch nemesis. Personally, I have no problem with other schools not wanting to verbally destroy me, but that's just me.
Politics
I'm proud to have created a very diverse academic environment. I'm not a very political school, but you might run into a gay rights or marijuana legalization protest. I may be located on a military base, but my classes are definitely on the liberal side.
You should apply to me if...
you're outdoorsy, love the ocean, and would like to graduate without a mountain of debt.
