California State University--Sacramento
Hallmarks and Quirks
Things I'm Good At:
- Being green. Seriously. I have over 300 different types of trees and I'm 300 acres large. I'm also right next to a river that's complete with biking and walking trails.
- Working out. I have a two-story, state-of-the-art gym that has a TRX room, a rock climbing wall, and fitness classes.
- Nursing. It's my most popular program and was ranked by U.S. News and World Report as one of the top in the nation.
- Fitting your budget. My tuition rates are low, just like the cost of living in Sacramento in general.
My Top 5 Must-Haves:
- A reusable coffee mug decked out with stickers from REI. I just got a Starbucks and I have six other places to get the study juice at.
- A bike. Parking can get expensive, so commuting by either bike or bus is the best way to go. There's plenty of bike parking and I even have bike lockers for those fancy-shmancy cyclists. Ooh la la.
- Comfy shoes. Sorry, ladies and gents—no stilettos here. My campus is huge. Comfy shoes are a must. Plus, it's nice to have some tennis shoes on if you want to work out at my awesome gym after class.
- Good laptop battery. The outlets around campus can get crowded, so it's super important to have a full laptop and cell battery when you arrive.
- Rainboots. Don't worry, I'm not as rainy as Washington might be, but I'm far enough north to put me out of California's desert-y zone.
Why You Might Have Heard of Me:
- Tom Hanks graduated from my theatre department.
- Have I mentioned the trees yet? Okay, I have, but I have so many that it's worth mentioning again. I am "Tree Campus USA," after all.
- I've got a top-notch ROTC program. If you are interested in training to be an officer in the army, I'm where it's at.
On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...
Most campus events are on the weekdays, so on Saturday nights, you'll usually find me working out or studying. If I am going out, I'll probably go off campus for a night on the town.
Favorite Hangouts:
- Ecogrounds Coffee. Come here for…well…coffee. What did you expect? It's just as green as I am and serves up its drinks in eco-friendly containers.
- Java City. This one has a couple locations, but the best one is in my library. Come here for some grade-A study fuel.
- MIX Downtown. For twenty-one-and-uppers, this is an awesome place to have some drinks and dance. There are even college nights where students can get discounts.
- The University Union. Food, concerts, beer, club events, and other cool, college-y stuff.
Quirks:
- I have a Japanese tea room and Zen garden for students to escape to.
- The Robert Else Gallery displays both professional and student work. Don't be surprised if you see your calculus buddy's name next to a painting.
- Do you believe in monsters? You just might if you come here. These vicious lil' guys will take your lunch, homework, and pretty much anything else if you let them. Some people call them squirrels…and they are feared by many. Consider yourself warned.
Famous Alumni:
- Tom Hanks. Woody from Toy Story. And, you know, a bunch of other amazing movies.
- Lester Holt, NBC news anchor
- Creed Bratton, actor on The Office
- Bridget Marquardt, The Girls Next Door reality TV star
- Janice Rodgers Brown, a federal judge on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit
