License Classes: Bring an Apple for the Teacher (Types of Licenses)

A "normal" license is a Class C license. That is, with a Class C, you can drive all the normal cars that you would normally drive out of your friendly Toyota dealer's show lot.*

With that Class C license, you can also drive:

  • A house-on-wheels that is 40 feet or less in length
  • A three-wheel motorcycle, but not a two-wheeler. That's a Class M1.
  • A normal vehicle of more or less any type that is less than 26,000 pounds.
  • A three-axle vehicle weighing 6,000 pounds or less.
  • A giant van or mini bus that seats between 10 and 15 people. With the Class C, these vehicles carry special additional requirements, and for good reason. You're entrusted to drive likely non-family member strangers. It's a lot of responsibility, so The Man makes you have a valid medical certification on file with the DMV saying that you aren't likely to have a brutal heart attack on the freeway and kill everyone. And that cert has to be held in the van as well. You also need a signed doc in the van that states you've never been convicted of reckless driving, drunk driving, or a hit-and-run in the last five years. If you make up that signature or lie, The Man can put you in jail for perjury, so don't do it.
  • A golf ball.
  • Your parents crazy.

You get to tow a bunch of stuff with a Class C license, too, specifically a normal vehicle weighing 10,000 pounds or less.

  • If the car you're driving weighs over 4,000 pounds, you can tow a fifth wheel or trailer coach cab thing weighing between 10k and 15k pounds. You can't do this as a pro, though, which means you can't be paid for the privilege in any way.
  • Farmers or their employees can tow any combo of vehicles that are 26,000 pounds or less as part of their normal job and not for a specific for-pay service.
  • You can't tow more than one vehicle.
  • And if your car weighs 4,000 pounds, you can't tow another car that weighs over 6,000 pounds.
