For Minors: Learner's Permit & Graduated Licensing
Key thing for those of you under 18: get Mom, Dad, or your guardian to sign your application. And there are a ton of things to remember as a young driver.
A short list:
- You must be at least 16 years old to obtain a Learner's Permit and hold it for at least 180 days before you can upgrade to an Intermediate Class D.
- You have to pass the normal vision and written exams, as well as the driving test, regardless of whether you're getting an Intermediate Class D or unrestricted Class D.
- Bring all of the proper identification. It's a lot harder than you think to get McLovin printed on your license.
- If you're under 18, you have to be in compliance with school attendance. So, if you planned on dropping out of high school to become a taxi driver, you're out of luck.
- You must provide proof that you completed either a state-approved driver education course at your high school or a four-hour safety class offered by the Transportation Cabinet prior to upgrading from an Intermediate Class D to an unrestricted Class D.
