For Minors: Learners Permit
New Jersey has three different options for getting your license: the Early Bird Road, the Young Adult Road, and the Adult Road.
While we'll cover a few points of all three, we're mainly going to focus on the Early Bird, as we imagine you'll want to get out of the house and into a car as soon as humanly possible.
The Early Bird Road
A few points:
- You must be at least 16 years old to obtain a Learner's Permit and at least 18 years old for an unrestricted Class D License.
- You have to pass the normal vision and written exams for the Learner's Permit, as well as the driving test for the Class D.
- Bring all of the proper identification. It's a lot harder than you think to get McLovin printed on your license.
- If you're under 18, you have to be in compliance with school attendance. So, if you planned on dropping out of high school to become a taxi driver, you're out of luck.
- You must provide proof that you have completed or are enrolled in a state-approved driver education course in order to get your permit at 16, and you have to have a driving instructor purchase the permit for you... It's a lot more legal than it sounds.
The Young Adult Road
There is essentially no difference between the Early Bird Road and the Young Adult Road except for that the Young Adult Road deals with those who either never took driver education or who simply waited until 17 to get a permit.
The Adult Road
The Adult Road is for, uh, adults.
If you're 21 or over and have never had a license, then this one's for you. The wait times between permit, probationary license, and unrestricted license are a bit shorter than with the other two options, as the MVC assumes that you're smarter and more mature than your younger counterparts.
