College of Our Lady of the Elms

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Nursing. Do you want to be as good as Nurse Joy from Pokemon? Yes? Good. I produce excellent nurses. They may not heal you in the press of a button...but they're the next best thing.

  • Teaching teachers. Ask anyone around here—nearly all of the local public elementary and high schools want my education graduates to work for them.

  • Field Hockey, soccer, and basketball. What can I say? My students kind of do it all.

  • Being beautiful. Seriously, my campus looks good in every season.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. Blankets to cozy up in. My buildings are beautiful but old, and the winters here do not mess around.

  2. An appetite. The food on campus is crazy good, so be ready to indulge. (Maybe bring some stretchy pants to make room for seconds.)

  3. A laptop. We rock when it comes to academics, so make sure your hands are ready to type. Don't worry; we have ample nooks on campus to take refuge in when you're cramming in that final paper in the wee hours of the night.

  4. A car. I'm close to other colleges and attractions, but they're a bit beyond walking distance. If you don't have your own wheels, it'll be public transportation for you.

  5. A shovel. If you bring a car, get ready to shovel it out on the regular. Like I said, winter takes itself pretty seriously around these parts.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • You may have had a run-in with one of the many amazing nurses and teachers I've created.

  • My new, fancy schmancy Center for Health and Sciences (where top-notch nurses are made) has definitely won me some popularity points.

  • My devotion to community service—I give back about as much as Oprah does.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

At the Rumbleseat. This is a little pub down the street from campus, and it's a great place to bump into friends, eat some grub, and watch the big game.

When I'm feeling quieter, I chill in the dorms or—on the unfortunate homework-filled weekend—head to the library. My greatest hangout spot, however, is the outdoor fire pit. I like to head here with some hot cocoa and a book and relax in a reclining chair. What could be better?

Favorite Hangouts:

  • Poetry readings. Whether they are at the Mary Dooley College Center or the new Blue House for Writing, get ready to be moved by some verbal art.

  • Fire pit. 'Nuff said.

  • The little pond by the chapel. There's nothing quite like the company of some koi and the serene rippling water sound.

  • The library has some pretty sweet spots—literally. There are usually cookies and coffee around for students to have while they relax.

Quirks:

  • Community service is a graduation requirement here, so come ready to give back.

  • You have to take a religion course here. Fear not, though—you don't have to take a strict Catholic course, despite my faith. That said, you'll probably have to go to mass at least once.

Famous Alumni:

  • Tracey Butler, creator of the famous comic Lackadaisy

  • Joan Hartley, a Connecticut state senator

  • Mike Lima, an American soccer player on the Western Mass Pioneers

  • Jerod Brammer, a microbiologist who's led international efforts to contain Ebola
