Middle Market

The term “middle market,” or “mid-market,” is used to roughly describe the middle part of the economy in terms of revenue. In general, companies with revenues between $5 million and $1 billion annually are considered mid-market. If that sounds like a pretty large range, it is, which is why it’s also broken down further into low middle market ($5M-$50M), middle market ($50M-$500M), and upper middle market ($500M-$1B).

On a less grand scale, the term “middle market” can also be used to refer to a specific industry. Let’s say revenues among fidget spinner manufacturing companies range from $50,000 annually to $9 million. A company with revenues of about $3.5 million would be considered middle market in that industry, even though it would technically classify as low middle market when we’re discussing the economy as a whole.
