Skittish. Skirtish. Scottish. They all dance and flop about, wearing those checkered skirt things. You can't predict whether the hem of the kilt is going up or down or just jittery sideways at any one moment in the dance.
So...a skittish market? Yeah, it does the same. One moment it's bullish and wants to go up; the next, there are rumors of some stupid political thing that crushes the market. Then it fights back when hopes arise of a monkey being elected president...only to be dashed when it turns out it's yet another human.
Skittish. Up. Down. Sideways. In big hops. 'Round and 'round she goes, nobody knows where she slows...
