Fordham University
Hallmarks and Quirks
Things I'm Good At:
- Nailing the internship game. My students have worked with over 2,600 New York-based companies, from J.P. Morgan Chase to 60 Minutes to Major League Baseball. I'll get your foot in the door.
- Dance and theater. My dance and theatre majors get the best of both worlds—a great academic education and intensive career-oriented training right in the middle of the Big Apple.
- Football (and Vince Lombardi). I'll be the first to admit that these days, I lack a little school spirit when it comes to sports. In the 1930s, though, Vince Lombardi was kicking butt on the turf. As sports fans know, Vince went on to become the most influential NFL coach in history. I'll take it.
- Service and social justice. Over 80% of my grads participate in some form of community service. Not that I'd ever brag.
My Top 5 Must-Haves:
- A MetroCard for the subway. In case you missed it, New York's a big city. A MetroCard can take you from the Bronx to Brooklyn in no time flat.
- Cooking skills, or cash to eat out. Yeah...the cafeteria food is pretty terrible. Sorry.
- Your ID. Safety is important around here, so we require you to use this to get in and out of all my buildings (and get discounts at local shops and restaurants).
- Broad academic interest. My core curriculum is rigorous, which means we'll be spending a lot of time on everything from Form and Rhetoric to Finite Mathematics.
- A good day-planner. I give you tough classes, a top-tier internship, and the coolest city on earth to explore—you have to figure out how to fit all that into one day.
Why You Might Have Heard of Me:
- My insanely beautiful campus in the Bronx. I've been around a long time. My Gothic spires and rolling green lawns have enticed college hopefuls for years.
- My Jesuit heritage. Especially with the Jesuit Pope Francis in the Vatican, we've gone mainstream.
- Fordham Law. You've seen it on the t-shirts of TV and movie lawyers like Mike Flaherty and Michael Clayton for good reason: I'm one of the best law schools in the U.S.
On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...
What's "regular?" I'm all about getting a diverse education, and I feel the same way about my extracurricular activities. You might find me at a free Imagine Dragons concert in Central Park or a free taping of Saturday Night Live at 30 Rock.
I might be killing at beer pong at a friend's Belmont apartment, or slaying the trivia competition at Putnam's in Brooklyn. Unless I'm studying hard at Club Lib (what I call Walsh Library), I'm probably off-campus, kicking it in the Big Apple.
Favorite Hangouts:
- Arthur Avenue is the most authentic Italian neighborhood you can find in this town, and that's saying something. It's also the heart of my college nightlife.
- The theatre. I'm steps away from The Great White Way, and Broadway offers some killer student discounts. Wanna save even more moolah? My theater program is one of the best in the country, and all their shows are free. Who knows: You might just see the next Denzel Washington, Taylor Schilling, or Dylan McDermott (all alums).
- New York Botanical Garden and the Bronx Zoo. Need a break from the big city hustle? If you put me, the Garden, and the Zoo together, you'd have the biggest green space in all of New York City. Smell that? It's fresh air.
- New York City. Did I mention I'm in New York City? 'Cause I am.
Quirks:
- The Ram Van. For just $2.50, I'll drive you from the Lincoln Center campus to the Rose Hill campus and back, almost any time of day. Warning: The Bronx Expressway is not always the smoothest drive. Fasten your seatbelts...it's gonna be a bumpy ride.
- While I definitely party-hardy when I feel like it, I don't partake in the Greek scene.
- Midnight Breakfast. Yeah, it's at 10:00PM, not midnight, but it's easily the best party of the year. You get to hang with Father McShane, the University President, and eat french toast sticks for free. Ka-ching.
- Two-campus life. Think about it like this: Rose Hill is the super-smart, sporty, beer pong champion older sibling, while Lincoln Center is the super-smart, artsy, Friends trivia champion younger sibling. Apply to just one, but take classes at either and get the benefits of both.
