Millersville University

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Diversity, diversity, and more diversity. You'll meet all kinds of people from all over the world on campus. It's like the Epcot Center but without the unbearable summertime heat.

  • Girls' field hockey and track and field. They're known for kicking some serious keister around here.

  • My education department. It's always been top-notch, whether in elementary, high school, special education, or educational leadership. I started as a school for teachers, and to this day I'm still churning out more teachers than most other schools in Pennsylvania.

  • Student-run organizations and Greek life. They pretty much rule the roost around MU. If you want to have a social life, you should join at least one.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. Rain boots and an umbrella. Lancaster's not exactly Seattle, but with all the walking you'll have to do, it's smart to keep your tootsies dry.

  2. A reliable computer. Most of my professors are environmentally conscious, so you'll probably never get handouts or printed assignments. You will, however, be doing online versions of those, which requires (surprise) a decent Internet connection.

  3. Layers of clothing. Pennsylvania weather sure does like to be weird: On a Monday it could be seventy degrees and sunny, but four days later it could be thirty-two with flurries. Bring more than tank tops, guys.

  4. A class that has a diversity requirement. Yep, even if you're an engineering major. Also, you need it to graduate.

  5. Extra PJs if people happen to stay the night at your place. You can thank me later.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • Many people have said that Millersville is like a private school but without a private school price tag, and saving money has never been a bad thing in my book.

  • The swans on campus are known for constantly displaying their affectionate love for each other. You've never heard about that...? Okay fine, it's still cute though.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

Most of my students usually hang out at organization-sponsored activities and events. PrideFest? Student musicals and plays? The guys from Workaholics? Oh yeah, I've got 'em all.

During the spring semester, students can be seen getting pumped up for the infamous Spring Concert, where they've seen the likes of Ludacris, Mac Miller, Panic! at the Disco, and many other big-name artists who've come just to entertain MU students.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The campus pond, where students can see Miller, S'Ville, and all their animal friends, such as squirrels, turtles, fish, and ducks hanging out together.

  • If you live in the dorms, chances are you'll end up at the Anchor several times during the semester to feed your late night cravings.

  • The local Park City Mall, where students can get free bus rides to and from MU. Plus, it's also a really huge mall. They even have a Sephora

  • During the first Friday of every month, local Lancaster artists open their doors for free for everyone to see the different kinds of art Lancaster has to offer. Many of them also do free giveaways. Who doesn't love free stuff?

  • Like most students, you'll probably end up spending all your Flex dollars at the Starbucks in the on-campus library, but don't worry: You'll get brand new Flex dollars at the beginning of every semester.

Quirks:

  • Many animals live on campus. The squirrels are known for jumping out of trashcans and scaring unsuspecting students out of their lunch money.

  • Our weird Pennsylvania weather. We've had 103 degree heat, ice storms, and Hurricane Sandy (during the hurricane, the students couldn't leave their dorms for two days).

  • Hersheypark and the Hershey chocolate factory are about twenty minutes away, which is great if you've got a serious sweet tooth. Which we do.

Famous Alumni:

  • Black Thought, a rapper from Philly

  • Bob Van Dillen, a TV meteorologist and journalist

  • Matthew Knisely, a journalist

  • Robb Riddick, a football player

  • Malik B, of The Roots from Philly
