Nazareth College

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Lacrosse. I bro out and rip twine far better than the average DIII school, and I'm proud of it, because I string up the spoons with a purpose. My men's team has been at the top of their conference throughout the last several years and has won three national championships: 1992, 1996, and 1997. While it's been a while since a national championship, they regularly make an appearance in the tournament.

  • Men's volleyball. Who are those skinny giants littering campus? Yeah, those are the volleyball players. Don't be scared; they only kill shots. Consistently nationally-ranked, my men's team was crowned national champs in 2011 and were the runners-up in 2013.

  • Physical therapy. I offer a six-year PT program, meaning there's no need for enrolled students to apply to PT school. They stay for six years and leave as doctors of physical therapy. That's right, I groom doctors here.

  • Performing arts. Theater and music are popular majors. They're also popular recreational activities—I've got a bit of an artsy streak.

  • Community service. Over ninety percent of students are somehow involved in community service during their time with me. Every year, I host a Relay for Life in the gymnasium, send all my freshman out for a community service day during their orientation, and hold fundraising events for the local children's hospital.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. A warm jacket. It doesn't have to be anything special; it just has to keep you from getting frostbite. You're going to need it.

  2. An appreciation for purple and gold. If you don't already love those colors then you will, and if you don't believe me, then come back after you graduate. I bleed purple and gold.

  3. A competitive attitude. Sure, I'm friendly, but I also really like to win. Whether it's a sports game, an art show, or an audition, everyone here is working towards their best self.

  4. An appetite. I've got everything here. Chipotle, Moe's (if you're one of those people), The Cheesecake Factory, and a whole bunch of other restaurants, are all just a short ride—or long walk—away. I've also got some local favorites, such as garbage plates (gross name, but tastes delicious), that you won't be able to resist.

  5. Flip flops. Summer through spring, you can wear them to class all year. And before you accuse me of being a filthy liar/totally insane, let me explain: my buildings are connected by a glorious system of underground tunnels. If you wanted, you could roll out of bed, throw on the flip flops, and head to class. And if you did do that, you'd be just like the other twenty kids in your class. Going outside is overrated.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • My tunnel system. Nearly all of my buildings are connected by an extensive tunnel network. Unfortunately, there are a couple locations where you have to enter the horrifying sunshine and fresh air, but for the most part it's not required.

  • Physical therapy. The cadaver lab on campus makes me extremely unique. Only my PT staff and students have access, but it has become a very prestigious program. I save students a great deal of hassle with my six years straight through program.

  • Being a short way from the first ever Wegmans. If you haven't heard of Wegmans, then come here. Just come here. You'll be a mile away from quite possibly the best grocery store in America—and it's not just me who thinks that.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

I'm out and about. Whether I'm at a bar, an athletic house party, a movie, or just hanging out at a friend's house, chances are I'm off-campus. I'm not a huge party school, but I definitely like to have fun.

The bar scene in Rochester is huge, so I tend to head downtown on Saturday nights. You'll also probably find me with several of my friends from local colleges, as sometimes we share parties and go to the same bars. I stay away from Fisher events, however.

Academics are obviously important, but I make sure to make time for fun as well. What's college if not fun? Simple: it's not college.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The Cabaret—or as I call it, the Cab. I like to grab a quick lunch in between classes and meet up with some friends at this popular café-like space in the middle of campus.

  • Chipotle. Located in the plaza two minutes from campus, it might be the most popular place to eat, and it's not even on campus. If you're a Moe's person, shame on you, but there's one of those too.

  • Sorelle's. Located in the basement of one of my academic buildings, this is another café-like eatery where it's easy to just relax.

  • The stadium is where the athletes work out, practice, and sometimes just meet up. Just make sure you wear a cut-off shirt, or you'll probably feel out of place. If you're looking for just a standard workout, regular scenery, and a gym with normal amounts of testosterone, I'd recommend just heading to my other gym on campus.

Quirks:

  • Experiential learning. As a school featuring a large population of undeclared students, I work hard to offer them a variety of classes to aid them in discovering their path. I have what I call core requirements which all students are required to take before they graduate. Introductory courses in math, social science, natural science, religion, arts, English, History, and depending on the major, foreign language.

  • My professors are more than teachers. I take tremendous pride in the student-teacher relationships. Pop in just to say hello; it's normal here.

  • This year, I was able to give 100% of the freshman some sort of financial aid, which was good, because I'm expensive. College ain't cheap, and I'm certainly no exception.

  • I have one of the best internship programs in Rochester, and my director helps place my students. I'm fully aware that applying for internships can be a stressful process, and I'd never force you to go through that alone. We're all in this together.
