The Ohio State University

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Football. 2014 National Football Champs. First and foremost, know this fact.

  • Band life. TBBITL = The Best Band In The Land (Everyone stays in his or her seat for the halftime of the football games). Script Ohio always steals the show.

  • Raising money and having an incredible support system. Ohio State's Buckeyethon Dance Marathon is a twenty-four-hour fundraiser every February that raises over one million dollars for Nationwide Children's Hospital. Also, Peletonia, the annual bike tour, is open to all who want to participate and raise money to help cancer research at the James Comprehensive Cancer Center at Ohio State. Peletonia has raised over $82 million for cancer research.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. A friend. There are over 50,000 students at OSU, so make some friends and get to socializin'.

  2. Your Buck ID. This thing is your college pass. It can get you student discounts, all around Columbus transportation, into campus buildings, some pretty sweet deals on art shows, athletic events, music concerts, and comedy shows. It's a portable bank account.

  3. A club. I have over 1,000 student organizations: anything from the Meat Science Club to the Jump Rope Club. And…you can start your own. There's something for everyone.

  4. A passport. OSU offers over one hundred study abroad programs. I'll help you go places. Aw yeah.

  5. Fan gear. You must bleed red or gray, but both are preferred. Wear something OSU at all times and you're automatically awesome. But just to seal the deal, get season football tickets, too.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • From one of the over half a million living Ohio State alumni in the world. Duh.

  • Ohio State's Wexner Medical Center has been named one of the country's best for twenty-two consecutive years. Be sure to check out this medical center. It employs some of the best doctors in America, provides more than $170 million in charity and community support every year, cares for more than 1.5 million patients each year, and has over 20 centers and institutes for medical research. Absolutely incredible.

  • Wexner Center for the Arts is an "internationally renowned research lab and center for contemporary art, film, dance, and other performances." As you can see, "Wexner" is a pretty big name on campus.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

  • Sloopy's Diner, a 1950s-inspired on-campus restaurant in the Union. It is open 'til 2:00AM and it's a great hangout spot for after I win a night game—which, let's be real, is bound to happen.

  • Anywhere on High Street. 'Nuff said.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • Are you an athlete or fitness enthusiast? The RPAC is the largest collegiate recreation center inthe nation. No biggie.

  • Are you a study-hard brainiac? Thompson Library is home to 1.25 million volumes of books, 230 computers, 1,800 study seats, and a cafe. Plus, the Campus Reading Room on the top floor gives pretty spectacular views of campus and downtown Columbus.

  • The Oval. The large, grassy field on central campus that's always packed in the Fall and Spring. You'll want to make this a favorite hangout.

  • The Shoe, my football stadium

  • The Schott. Basketball, hockey, large events, and concerts are hosted here.

Quirks:

  • The Oval long walk. It starts on the east side of the Oval on College Road and leads up to the statue of William Oxley Thompson and the Thompson Library. As the legend goes, "Couples able to walk, hand in hand, across the entire length are destined to stay in love forever, or get married." Ah, I can hear the wedding bells already.

  • Knowlton Hall, home to the School of Architecture, has a roof garden that's accessible from the fourth floor. Nothing says "party" like a roof garden.

  • When Mirror Lake on South Campus gets decorated with holiday lights, there's a lighting ceremony called "Light Up the Lake." It's a pretty popular tradition on campus.

  • The Ohio Union Activities Board organizes a Welcome Week concert before classes start every fall semester. Krewella, Lady Antebellum, One Republic, 2 Chainz, and Big Sean have all performed there. Also, as a student, it's free.

Famous Alumni:

  • President Rutherford B. Hayes
  • Archie Griffith. He's the main man on campus.
  • Patricia Heaton, Emmy Award-winning actress
  • R.L. Stine. From, you know, Goosebumps.
  • Bob Knight, famous basketball coach and player
  • Jack Nicklaus, professional golfer
  • The entire band, O.A.R.
  • Woody Hayes didn't actually graduate from Ohio State, but he's a very famous football OSU football coach and a name you'll hear a lot around campus.
