Point Loma Nazarene University

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Surfing. My surf team is consistently one of the best in the country.

  • Getting students into medical school. Praise be to my bio program.

  • Nursing. My nursing program is rigorous, and nursing majors have a (deserved) reputation for being sociopathic grade-grubbers. But hey, at least they know how to take your vitals.

  • Synchronized dances. My student body is comprised of awkward people who can't dance, so at social functions, every other song on the playlist is the Macarena or the Cha-Cha Slide.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. A surfboard. I'm right by the beach.

  2. A car. San Diego has very little public transportation.

  3. Instagram. You will need to take pictures of every single sunset. #nofilter #blessed

  4. A passport. Mexico is a mere twenty miles away.

  5. Long, flowing hair and the Bible.

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • Unless you're a Christian in Southern California, you probably haven't heard of me. But Surfer Magazine did call me the "Best College for Surfers Who Want to Surf Between Classes" once. Righteous.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

  • My night usually begins with a bonfire at the fire pits in Ocean Beach. After some spirited and depressing discussion about race relations and human-trafficking, I may casually saunter over to a house party and bust out my acoustic guitar to serenade some party-goers with a few contemporary Christian jams.

  • Then, I'd head downtown to the Gaslamp District to awkwardly dance while other club-goers shake their heads in disapproval. I like to finish my nights with a stop to one of the many late-night taco shops. Carne asada fries or a California burrito are my staples. I don't stay out too late because I have to be up for church in the morning.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • Adalberto's, a delicious Mexican restaurant
  • Ortiz's, a delicious Mexican restaurant
  • Cotija's, another delicious Mexican restaurant
  • Cotixan (not to be confused with Cotija's), a delicious Mexican restaurant
  • Ocean Beach
  • Mission Beach
  • Pacific Beach
  • Imperial Beach
  • Dog Beach (but this one always smells like urine)

Quirks:

  • One of the biggest clubs on campus is the Hawaii club. The members frequently cook up some spam and dance the hula.

  • The baseball field on campus was voted "America's Most Scenic Ballpark."

  • We have strict hazing policies, which were established after a group of sophomores peed somewhere they shouldn't have.

Famous Alumni:

  • Hoku, the chick who sang the song "Perfect Day," which plays in the opening of pretty much every romantic comedy made in the early 2000s

  • Daniel Destin Cretton, an up-and-coming filmmaker and director. His movie Short Term 12 won the grand jury prize at SXSW Film Festival.

  • Greg Laswell, singer, songwriter, and husband of Ingrid Michaelson
