Allons-y!

Context

This line was spoken by the Tenth Doctor (played by David Tennant) in various episodes of Doctor Who (2005- ).

Joining the pantheon of great TV catchphrases, like "D'oh", "How you doin'?", and "Did I do that?", is a French phrase from a British sci-fi show—"Allons-y!" It means "let's go," which makes it a fitting catchphrase for the Tenth Doctor, who would probably explode a Fit Bit with all his running around.

The Tenth Doctor says it at the most random times, like when he's sitting on a train or about to save an interstellar version of the Titanic. And while he's on the Titanic, he finds a midshipman named Alonso and has a little fun with his catchphrase and the sailor's name.

"Allons-y" is the perfect catchphrase for a trench coat wearing Timelord, who is always on the move through time and space, going from flirting with Madame de Pompadour to fighting the robotic Cybermen in the wink of an eye.

Where you've heard it

You've heard this quote when your sci-fi/British TV-inclined friend wants you to hurry up for whatever reason. Maybe David Tennant is filming a new movie or TV show across town, who knows?

NPR used this quote in the title of their article about the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This is a fun line and a lot nicer than yelling at your friend to hurry up. Just because it's French doesn't mean it's pretentious. That's a stereotype, y'all.
