"As good as dead"

Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised. Therefore sprang there even of one, and him as good as dead, so many as the stars of the sky in multitude, and as the sand which is by the sea shore innumerable.

Context

This line is written in Hebrews 11:11-12.

Hebrews talks about faith and all the crazy miracles that have happened because people had it. One example: Abraham and Sarah were able to have a baby even though both of them were waaaay old. Now that's a miracle.

Where you've heard it

If something's "as good as dead," it's barely alive, whether it's a person, a team, an idea, or anything else.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

This is another gimme; hardly anybody would think this one's pretentious. But if they do, they're as good as dead, if you know what we mean.
