"Doubting Thomas"

But Thomas […] said unto them, Except I shall see in his hands the print of the nails […] I will not believe. [...] then came Jesus, the doors being shut, and stood in the midst, and […] saith he to Thomas, Reach hither thy finger, and behold my hands […] and be not faithless, but believing.

Context

This line is written by John in John 20:24-27.

So, Jesus has just been resurrected, and ten of the remaining apostles have seen him. Guess who hasn't.

Yup. Thomas.

And He just can't believe Jesus is back—until he sees him. And now no one will ever let him forget that.

Where you've heard it

Anytime someone doesn't believe something, they might be accused of being a "doubting Thomas," especially after they're proven wrong.

Pretentious Factor

If you were to drop this quote at a dinner party, would you get an in-unison "awww" or would everyone roll their eyes and never invite you back? Here it is, on a scale of 1-10.

Not too pretentious, but it might be annoying. Especially if you're talking to a guy actually named Thomas.
