St. Catherine University
Hallmarks and Quirks
Things I'm Good At:
- Fashion. The annual Katwalk (get it? Get it?) is a chance for the fashion majors to show off their considerable skills.
- I'm never one to stand around idly when someone needs help, which is one reason why my public health and social work majors are really popular. (The other reason is that they're really good.)
- Surviving Minnesota winters. I throw a big bash every spring called the Dew Drop Bop to celebrate the fact that we've all made it another year.
- Need a nurse? Look no further. I've got one of the best nursing programs around.
My Top 5 Must-Haves:
- Warm clothes. If you only bring shorts, November through March is going to be a pretty miserable time for you. Do yourself a favor and invest in fleece.
- Books. If I'm not reading for school, I'm reading for fun. Reading's the best.
- Extra ramen, just in case the weather's really gross and you don't want to schlep over to the caf.
- A bus pass so that you can get to all the cool classes that the other universities are offering.
- A laptop. Trekking back from the library at 2:00AM in January is, like, the least fun thing ever. Do yourself a favor and bring a laptop so you can write your papers from the comfort of your dorm room.
Why You Might Have Heard of Me:
- U.S. News & World Report thinks I'm one of the best Midwestern colleges, ranking me at #15.
- In 1937, I was the first Catholic institution in the USA to be recognized by a little thing called the Phi Beta Kappa Council.
On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...
Chilling out in the Pulse (the go-to hangout space on campus) with my friends, watching movies, and eating delicious junk food. I also like to go out into the Twin Cities—there's always something going on around here.
Favorite Hangouts:
- The nearest Menchie's. Froyo is the best.
- Walking along the St. Paul River, admiring nature (and working off that froyo).
- Chilling by the private lake, feeding the ducks or just catching some rays.
Quirks:
- There are no roads running through my campus. The founders wanted it to be a safe haven from the noisy outside world, so they decided not to let anybody blunder through the middle of campus with their noisy machinery.
- There are a lot of squirrels on campus, and I take good care of the little guys. Injured squirrels are given lots of TLC around here.
Famous Alumni:
- Nancy Youngblut, a.k.a. Kolana on Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Scarlet Forest on One Life to Live
- Heather M. Hodges, former U.S. ambassador to Ecuador and Moldova
- Ann Winblad, partner of Hummer Winblad Venture Partners
- Madeleine Bordallo, the first female delegate from Guam to the House of Representatives
- Mary Rose O'Reilley, poet and non-fiction writer
