In our heart of hearts we know you've come across this phrase before. Even if it did have an unexplained "s" attached to it, we're willing to bet you still knew what someone meant.

People want you to believe them. So they toss this in the front of phrases like:

• "I didn't want to admit it, but in my heart of hearts, I knew that was true."
• "If you think in your heart of hearts that is true, then I believe you."
• "I don't look on it, but I am beginning to feel it in my heart of hearts." (Okay, that one was from LOTR.)

Basically, this phrase gets to the heart of the matter. In more ways than one. It's saying that the strongest bonds with people are in the heart. It's also saying the heart is the core of us. It's where we keep our secrets and truths.

So next time you hear "heart of hearts" you'll know wholeheartedly what it means at its core.
