Stonehill College

Hallmarks and Quirks

Things I'm Good At:

  • Traveling. Over one third of my students go abroad during their time with me. You might think this means my students and I are "taking a break," but they always come back. You know what they say: If you love them, let them go.

  • Community service. Whether you're interested in going into the streets of Easton or heading all over the world to lend your hands for a week, I've got a the community service program for you.

  • Music. Are you America's next singing sensation? If you are, then what you are doing reading about me? Run, child. Go. Be free. Wait, don't. Come back. If you really enjoy singing, I do have several music groups from you to choose from. Like a cappella? Got it. Chapel choir? Check. Musical theatre? Why, naturally.

My Top 5 Must-Haves:

  1. A North Face jacket. You need to blend in when you're in the wild. And by "wild," I mean my campus.

  2. A camera. I may be fairly small, but there's always something pretty to see.

  3. A passport. Whether you're a world-saving traveler already or not. Chances are, you will be by the time I'm done with you.

  4. A portable shovel. When the snow comes, you'll want it. Trust me.

  5. A nice outfit. Boston isn't far. Why not make a fancy night out of it?

Why You Might Have Heard of Me:

  • My campus is the summer home of Oliver Ames, the inventor of the modern shovel. I'm home to the only shovel museum in the world. Amazing, I know.

  • Actor John "Jack" Haley, best known for the Tin Man in The Wizard of Oz, sat on the board of advisors from 1968–1977.

  • The hill area on campus, known as "the caves," rests on bedrock that is over 400 million years old. That is some old hunk of hill.

  • In 1973, just before Aerosmith made it big, they performed at Stonehill to a packed crowd. Recently, lead singer Steven Tyler donated an autographed pair of his boots to me, which now rests comfortably on campus.

  • I'm home to the only bull cemetery in the world. I swear. You can't make this stuff up.

  • Bob Keeshan, otherwise known as Captain Kangaroo, received an honorary degree in 1991.

On a regular Saturday night, you can find me...

I'm definitely on campus. With an event almost every night, there's never a dull moment when you're with me. If you're not in the mood to go out, chilling in your dorm or at The Hill is definitely a good way to go.

Favorite Hangouts:

  • The Hill. It's got burgers, music, and comfy chairs. Yeah, I know you want to go.

  • Campus Ministry. Whether you're working, volunteering, or there to nab food from the kitchen, there is always a giant, fluffy couch to plop down on there.

  • MacPhaidin Library. It's really nice and quiet inside. Sometimes, that's just what you need.

  • Dunkin' Donuts. Wait, what? I have my own Dunkin' Donuts? I know, I totally just went up five points on your cool-o-meter, huh?

Quirks:

  • I'm a semester school. Fall and spring, that's my thing. But not to worry, I have winter break and summer sessions if you feel like being extra studious.

  • If you want to travel abroad, your tuition pays for your time in another country. Unfortunately, it won't pay for all the souvenirs…and let's be totally honest, there will be souvenirs.

  • There are miles of nature trails around me, so if you feel like escaping the antics of your schoolmates, the solitude of nature awaits you.
