Ishmael Beah

Ishmael is the central character of this story, so he's the one we're really rooting for to come out okay in the end. Even though we know from the first pages of the book that Ishmael will eventually survive and leave Sierra Leone, we still hold our breath every time he finds himself in mortal danger.
