Giovanni's experience with Mrs. Long and the library gave her hope. The education she got through reading helped her to see that things would change in the future. But there's also a something in line 47 that hints at something more frightening than what we might find in a book—while "no lions or witches scared me," the reality of life might have. We might be reading between the lines here—but, you know, that's what poetry is all about.
