Antagonist
Character Role Analysis
The War
Nothing threatens Jethro's happiness more than the big, bad Civil War. And while his family's mainly fighting the good fight (with the exception of Bill), the war still terrorizes Jethro's life at home. With all of his brothers off fighting, Jethro is forced to grow up mighty quickly, whether it's by defending his family's honor in town, taking charge of his own education, or handling Eb's desertion all by his lonesome. The thing that gets in our main man's way time and again is the war.
Guy Wortman
Picking on someone much smaller and younger than yourself is definitely grounds for being an antagonist, and that's exactly what Guy Wortman does when we meet him: he picks on Jethro. Now for most people intimidating a small child is bad enough, but Wortman feels the need to go even further, so he and his cronies also burn down Matt Creighton's barn. Someone needs to call up Taylor Swift and have her write a song about him.
