There's no one guide or mentor type in the film. Margo takes on Eve as a protégé and thinks she's going to help her along in her career, but the tables are turned when it's clear that Eve isn't interested in learning anything that's not going to help her steal Margo's career and boyfriend.

You could think of Addison DeWitt as the audience's guide, as he gives us the cynical lowdown on the world of the theater. We suspect he'd love it that we mentioned it.
