Annie Hall' s narrative backtracks through all of Alvy's successes and failures as a romantic partner—mainly with Annie, but also with his ex-wives, Allison and Robin—as Alvy tries to wrap his brain around why he and Annie couldn't go the distance.

In other words, like a classic protagonist, Alvy's flawed, relatable, and on an epic quest. His often-fantastical adventure through love-gone-sour gives both him and the audience an opportunity for analysis and introspection.
