Mother

After the lovey-dovey infatuation period of Annie's young girlhood is over, Annie's mother increasingly becomes an antagonist to her. At least, this is the way Annie sees it. When Annie's mother begins to pull back on the affection and stops "babying" her daughter, Annie takes great offense.

In fact, Annie finds it downright hypocritical that her mother would claim to love her so much only to separate herself slowly from her daughter and deny her kisses and undivided attention just because she is "becoming a young lady."
