Guide Mentor
Character Role Analysis
Equality 7-2521; Books
In a book all about how great self-centeredness is, would you actually expect anyone to guide the protagonist besides the protagonist himself? It's through his own studies into nature that Equality 7-2521 manages to outstrip in a few years what it has taken the combined forces of his society centuries to do. Needless to say, Equality 7-2521 is also responsible for all of his own decisions. The story tracks the way in which he progresses from listening to society to making his own will his only guide.
Of course, Equality 7-2521 isn't fully responsible for his greatest discovery of all: the discovery of "I." For that, he depends upon the books he finds in the house from the Unmentionable Times. Books are the closest thing to a guide Equality 7-2521 has.
