Guide Mentor
Character Role Analysis
God / Margaret
Here's the thing about God: being a guide is kind of his thing. And this book is no exception. Time and again God is who Margaret turns to, pleading to him privately in her bedroom for help with everything from growing boobs to making friends to figuring religion out.
But here's the other thing: God never responds. Not once. And we know that in the Judeo-Christian tradition God is a pretty chatty dude, so that makes us wonder if he's even listening to Margaret when she talks to him. And if he's not listening—because, say, he's helping stop famine or some such instead of listening to gripes about Nancy's gossip—then who is Margaret actually turning to for guidance? That would be herself, the one and only Margaret.
We think you could argue this either way, though, so who do you think is the guide in this book?
