Guide Mentor
Character Role Analysis
Paul Riesling
As a mentor, Paul isn't all that great. But he's the closest thing to a guide that Babbitt has in this book. When Babbitt first tells Paul about his dissatisfaction with his middle-class life, Paul totally understands. But even though Babbitt wants Paul to reassure him that he's living a good life, Paul does just the opposite and talks about what a terrible life it is.
It's Paul's eventual trip to prison that makes Babbitt totally lose his sense of direction. Without Paul around to talk to about deep issues, Babbitt feels like he's all alone in the world, and the only way he can express his frustration is to lash out by drinking and having an affair.
