Dr. Nolan

Of the older women in Esther's life, Dr. Nolan is perhaps the primary mentor figure. Esther explicitly compares Dr. Nolan to her mother, and Dr. Nolan's sympathy for Esther's troubles notably contrasts with Mrs. Greenwood's generally unsympathetic attitude. In contrast to Esther's mother, Dr. Nolan accepts Esther's desire for sexual and intellectual independence.
