How we cite our quotes: (Line)
Quote #1
They are the deep falls of the Christs of the soul, (9)
How many Christs can one soul have? This line about Christ(s) falling down reminds us of the earlier one about the deep trenches plowed into the face and back. In both cases someone who should be strong is being knocked down—hard.
Quote #2
of some adored faith blasphemed by Destiny. (10)
We're getting some switcharoo action here. Usually only God can be blasphemed, but here faith is being blasphemed. It's like faith itself is taking God's place. And who's doing all this blaspheming? Destiny—and she's not here to bring us Beyonce; she's here to ruin our plans.
Quote #3
Those bloodstained blows are the crackling of
bread burning up at the oven door. (11-12)
The burning of the bread in this metaphor stands in for the painful blows that life delivers. Its crackle is the sound of everything being ruined, of the loaf burning right as it comes out of the oven door. The bread itself stands for the hopes, dreams, and plans that get dashed at the last second. Burnt bread: it's a big bummer.
