Margery Kempe

It's a little strange to think of Margery Kempe as the heroine of any story, but she does have a way of wrangling with our sympathies throughout the narrative. She struggles with her demons (literally) and battles some pretty evil dudes in the world at large. And though we feel pretty irritated by all of her crying, we also feel a little protective of Kempe when the townsfolk of Lynn spit at her for carrying on. She may have a tough time winning sympathy, but it's hard not to root for someone who's willing to pray for you.
