• Marc is introduced to Sophie shortly after she arrives in New York. He encourages her to study hard and make something of herself.
• Martine reveals to Sophie that Marc helped arrange all the paperwork to bring Sophie from Haiti to the U.S.
• When Sophie and Martine arrive home from Haiti, Martine visits Marc to tell him that she's pregnant.
• Marc meets Joseph when Sophie brings her family to spend the day with Martine in Brooklyn.
• He calls Sophie to tell her that her mother has stabbed herself to death. When Sophie arrives in Brooklyn, he tells her the whole story of Martine's last night.
• Marc also makes all the arrangements for Martine's body to be repatriated back to Haiti and has Atie and Ifé notified. Sophie is angry with him for his interference.
• Back in Haiti after many decades, Marc marvels over the changes. He meets Ifé and Atie for the first time and just tries to help them get through the funeral.
