Captain Renault

Captain Renault is a mentor in the way that a binge-drinking, abusive father is a mentor. Rick simply watches Renault lead by example, and then does the exact opposite.

A lot of the changes we don't see right away. To prying eyes, Rick and Renault probably seem like best pals from the get-go. But it's Renault's disregard for all things moral that have started to eat away at Rick, and cause him to regret some of the turns his life has taken. Ultimately, it's probably Renault's refusal of decency that motivates Rick to get his act together.

Yeah, they're buddy-buddy at the very end, but only because Renault pulls a 180 of his own. And no, that is not a skateboard trick.
