• Pavel hunts for a cat with his brother Andrei.
• After catching the cat, Pavel is kidnapped by a man named Stepan Demidov. Stepan and his wife were going to feed Pavel to their son, but since their son has died in the meantime, they make him their new son—Leo.
• Leo becomes a war hero and joins the MGB, the Soviet secret police.
• A boy named Arkady is murdered in Moscow: his father, Fyodor, is an MGB agent. Leo is assigned with convincing the family that the boy's death was accidental.
• Leo then tracks down a man named Anatoly Brodsky, who is suspected of treason.
• After an interrogation, Leo realizes that Brodsky is innocent. Upset and confused, Leo takes a sick leave.
• Leo returns to work to find that Brodsky has been executed. Brodsky had also named Leo's wife, Raisa, as an accomplice.
• Leo decides to stand up for Raisa's innocence—a move that gets him fired from the MGB and forces him to join the militia in the small town of Voualsk.
• In Voualsk, Leo meets General Nesterov, who tells him about a local murder that has striking similarities to the one back in Moscow.
• Leo performs his own investigation with the help of Raisa and discovers a second body.
• Leo reveals this to Nesterov, who uses it to launch a manhunt for local gay men. Upset, Leo confronts Nesterov and tells him everything he knows.
• Later, Leo and Raisa head back to Moscow to meet with Fyodor. They also meet with Ivan, a friend of Raisa, who turns out to be a double agent.
• Leo and Raisa arrested on their return to Voualsk. After their interrogations, they're both placed on a train to the Gulag.
• After fighting off attackers, fleeing the train, and hiding from a search party, Leo and Raisa discover the serial killer's lair.
• Though he doesn't reveal it to Raisa, Leo learns the truth about his past. He also learns that the serial killer is his brother, Andrei.
• Leo meets Andrei but has difficulty killing him. With Raisa's help, he's finally able to pull the trigger.
• Leo is reinstated in the MGB after this success. He also starts a new homicide department in Moscow and adopts two girls whose parents died helping Anatoly Brodsky.
