Chiron
Chiron
Chiron was a wise and gentle centaur, famous for his knowledge of prophecy and medicine and also for being a tutor and mentor to some of Greece's greatest heroes. Achilles, Jason, and many others learned the fundamentals of heroism at Chiron's feet... or we guess we should say hooves, since Chiron had the upper body of a man and the lower body of a horse—just like the rest of centaurkind. Though he looked a lot like his half-horse cousins, Chiron's keen intelligence and mild attitude set him apart from other centaurs, who were known for getting drunk and stupid any chance they got. Poor Chiron's teaching career ended far too early when Heracles accidentally shot him with an arrow dipped in Hydra venom. In honor of his great contribution to the world, the wisest of centaurs was placed among the stars: now he can be seen glimmering in the sky as the constellation Sagittarius, or Centaurus, depending on who you ask.
